Creative Classes for Children at Artopolis Academy in Chelsea.
There is a particular moment we love seeing in a classroom.
A child has an idea, but does not yet know exactly how to make it.
There is a piece of fabric on the table, a sketch, some paint, perhaps a collection of materials. They try one thing. Change their mind. Ask a question. Try again.
And eventually, something that existed only in their imagination begins to take shape.
This is the idea behind Creative Classes at Artopolis Academy in Chelsea.
Alongside our language and educational programmes, we are developing a creative space where children can explore art, textiles and design - not simply by following instructions, but by learning how to turn their own ideas into something real.
Our creative programme includes Art Studio, Textile Studio and Made by Me Design Studio, with each studio offering children a different way to explore, experiment and create.
Creativity is not about making the “perfect” picture
Children are surrounded by finished things.
Finished toys. Finished clothes. Finished illustrations. Finished interiors.
What they rarely see is everything that happens before something becomes finished.
Someone had to imagine it.
Someone made the first sketch.
Someone chose the colour.
Someone tried a material that didn't work.
Someone changed the idea halfway through.
And someone eventually made it.
We want children to experience this process for themselves.
That is why our creative classes are not built around producing twenty identical pieces to take home at the end of the lesson.
Of course, children learn techniques and teachers give them guidance. But within that structure there should always be space for curiosity and individual decisions.
What would happen if I tried this?
That question is incredibly valuable.
Art Studio: learning to see
Art begins long before a child picks up a paintbrush.
It begins with looking.
In our Art Studio, children discover artists, artworks and different ways of seeing the world.
We might begin with Matisse and his extraordinary relationship with colour and shape. Another project might start with Paul Klee, an illustration, a piece of music or something found in nature.
We look together.
We talk.
We notice.
And then we make.
The aim is not to produce a smaller version of a famous painting.
We want the work of an artist to become a doorway into the child's own imagination.
A child can discover a technique and then ask:
What can I do with it?
This is where art becomes much more interesting than copying.
Textile Studio: discovering what materials can do
Textiles create a completely different creative experience.
Fabric has texture and movement. It can be folded, joined, layered, decorated and transformed.
Working with textiles introduces children to the pleasure of making something slowly with their hands.
It requires attention.
It develops patience.
And it teaches a wonderful lesson that children do not encounter often enough in a world of instant results: sometimes something beautiful is created one small step at a time.
In our Textile Studio, children can explore fabric, colour, texture and different textile techniques while gradually developing the practical skills needed to bring their ideas to life.
And there is something particularly satisfying about creating an object that can be touched, worn, used or kept.
Made by Me: from an idea to something real
Made by Me Design Studio takes the creative process one step further.
The starting point is an idea.
Then comes the question:
How could I actually make it?
Children begin to think like young designers.
They imagine, sketch, choose, test, change and create.
The finished project matters, of course. There is enormous pride in being able to say:
“I made this.”
But the journey towards it matters just as much.
An idea rarely works perfectly at the first attempt.
Children discover that changing your mind is not failure. Starting again is not failure. Encountering a problem is simply part of designing.
That is one of the reasons we called the studio Made by Me.
The emphasis is on me.
My idea.
My decisions.
My hands.
My creation.
Three studios, three different ways of thinking
Art, textiles and design naturally overlap, but they are not the same experience.
Art Studio encourages children to observe, interpret and express.
Textile Studio introduces materials, techniques, texture and making by hand.
Made by Me brings ideas and practical design together — asking children to think about how something can actually be created.
A child who moves between these experiences begins to understand something quite sophisticated:
creativity is not one particular skill.
It is a way of thinking.
You can observe something, imagine something different, experiment, encounter a problem and find your own solution.
Why we created Creative Classes at Artopolis Academy
Artopolis began as a school, and education remains at the heart of what we do.
But we have never believed that meaningful learning happens only while a child is sitting at a desk.
A child making a design is planning.
A child deciding how two materials can be joined is solving a problem.
A child discussing an artwork is learning to observe and articulate an opinion.
A child whose first idea did not work and who decides to try again is learning something perhaps even more important.
This is why creative projects have always had a place within the wider Artopolis Academy approach.
Our Creative Classes allow us to take that philosophy further and give art, textiles and design their own space.
And because Artopolis is also a Russian-language educational environment, some of our creative activities can naturally give bilingual children another context in which to hear, understand and use Russian.
But children come to a creative studio first and foremost to create.
That experience needs to remain genuine.
Creative classes near Sloane Square
Artopolis Academy is based in Chelsea, close to Sloane Square, and our children's programmes welcome families from Chelsea, Kensington and other parts of London.
Our growing creative programme includes:
Art Studio — artists, colour, drawing, painting, composition and mixed-media projects.
Textile Studio — fabric, texture, textile techniques and making by hand.
Made by Me Design Studio — developing an idea from the first sketch through experimentation to a finished creation.
Different projects develop different skills, but they share one principle:
we don't want to tell a child exactly what their imagination should look like.
We want to give them the knowledge, materials and confidence to discover that for themselves.
“I made it myself”
Children make many things during childhood.
Most of them will eventually disappear.
A painting gets replaced by another painting. A cardboard construction breaks. A carefully made object eventually ends up in a box.
But the experience behind it can remain.
The memory of having an idea.
Of not knowing how to make it at first.
Of figuring something out.
And finally being able to look at the result and say:
“That was my idea. I made it myself.”
That is what we want our Creative Classes at Artopolis Academy to give children.
Not simply more things to take home.
But the confidence to imagine something — and begin.
